Competency questions require you to talk about specific examples which demonstrate your ability in a particular competency.


The STAR approach is generally accepted as the best way to structure your answers:


  • Situation:    start by explaining the wider context
  • Task:            explain the task required by the situation
  • Action:         what actions did you take to complete the task, and, most importantly…..
  • Result:         the results of those actions 


Some examples may demonstrate more than one competency.
